Kenya, Estonia strengthen ties in digital collaboration

Kenya and Estonia have bolstered collaboration in the digital transformation sector, ICT Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo has said.

The CS made the revelation after holding discussions with the Estonian Ambassador to Kenya Daniel Erik Schaer.

Schaer is the first-ever Estonian Ambassador to Kenya.

“This is a significant step towards fostering stronger digital ties between Kenya and Estonia. Our deliberations centred on harnessing Estonia’s exemplary practices in digitalisation that have positioned it as a global best-case scenario for benchmarking,” he said.

Owalo said both countries are looking at contributing to global innovation and effective digital governance through mutual learning and exploring potential areas of cooperation.

This, he said, will be achieved by way of both countries fortifying their digital foundations.

Estonia is the champion in Europe in the online provision of public services and scores above the European Union average in digital skills and the Use of the Internet by citizens.

As for broadband, it is strong on mobile but has low fixed broadband coverage despite progress over the past year.

According to the Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI) 2023, Estonia had 45.16 per cent of Internet users aged 16-74 in 2022.
