Kenya Reaches Key Milestones in Disability Justice Access

Kenya has made strides in supporting persons with disabilities (PWDs), focusing on access to justice and reducing marginalization. The 2023-24 report by the National Council of Administration of Justice highlights the contributions of various stakeholders, including government and advocacy groups.

The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) has been central in addressing disability issues. Over the past year, it assisted individuals with various disabilities, including mental, hearing, and learning impairments.

KNCHR, in collaboration with the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection, launched a Needs Assessment Report for PWDs to address their challenges. It also partnered with the National Council for Persons with Disabilities to release the Second Status Report on Disability Inclusion.

The report highlights better inclusion of PWDs in public service and emphasizes the importance of coordinated efforts across sectors. The Council for Legal Education also made progress by accommodating candidates with special needs during exams.

In November, a disability inclusion conference was held, bringing together stakeholders to discuss further support for PWDs. The International Commission on Jurists also developed a policy digest to improve life for PWDs.
